Five Metrics Every Trader Should Track (Beyond Win Rate)

Win rate alone misleads. Expectancy, average R-multiple, max drawdown, and profit factor tell you whether your edge survives a bad month.

Social feeds celebrate win rate. Professional reviews start with expectancy. If your average winner is smaller than your average loser, a 70% win rate can still bleed the account slowly.

1. Win rate with sample size context

Track win rate per setup, not per month. Twenty trades is noise; eighty trades on the same pattern starts to mean something. JTrader tags let you filter by strategy so you do not mix scalps with swing trades in one percentage.

2. Average R-multiple

Express outcomes in R (risk units) instead of dollars. A +2R winner and a -1R loser are comparable across account sizes. Traders who think in R cut losers faster because the unit is defined before entry.

3. Expectancy per trade

Expectancy equals (win rate times average win) minus (loss rate times average loss). Positive expectancy means the system earns over a large sample. One lucky week does not fix negative expectancy.

  • Profit factor: gross profit divided by gross loss
  • Max drawdown: largest peak-to-trough equity drop
  • Recovery factor: net profit divided by max drawdown
  • Average hold time: spot overtrading vs premature exits

Turn numbers into rules

Write one action per metric. If drawdown exceeds 8%, halve position size until recovery. If profit factor drops below 1.2 for thirty trades, pause the setup. Metrics without rules are entertainment.

JTrader calculates these automatically from synced trades. Spend your review hour on decisions, not formulas. See your dashboard at app.jtrader.org after your next sync.
